Application of Spacelab hardware and know how to future space programs
Abstract
An attempt is made to define the possible applications of Spacelab hardware and expertise to future space missions. The basic capabilities of Spacelab are listed, with emphasis placed on its versatility, reusability, and serviceability. It is noted that while the Spacelab mission implementation costs are relatively high, they are still lower than the corresponding figures for European satellites. In adapting Spacelab to future missions, it is pointed out that certain improvements will be necessary. For example, the duration of missions must be extended to 20 days (instead of 7 days) and the electrical power available for experiments must be increased by approximately 4 kW.
