Italy in millimeter wave activities for space communication
Abstract
It is noted that the continued development of satellite communications will require that frequencies above 10 GHz be used in order to avoid bandwidth saturation and interference problems. Significant Italian achievements in this field are surveyed, starting with SIRIO 1 in 1968, which operated at 12-18 GHz. It is noted that Italy was also involved in the H-SAT program (Selenia being responsible for both 20/30 GHz communication and propagation payloads), but that the program was cancelled for political reasons. A satellite which will operate at 20/30 GHz is currently under development; it will be used for intercity communication during the last decade of the century.
