Performance requirements for the SS-TDMA sub-system of the Intelsat VI satellite
Abstract
The satellite-switched time division multiple access (SS-TDMA) approach is discussed with emphasis on the concepts of switch frame, frame unit, and switch state. Configurations obtained from previous definition studies are outlined, and a block diagram of the subsystems meeting the general requirements is presented. Specific requirements and constraints are also examined, including the timing source, distribution and control unit, and microwave switch matrix. The beam-switched SS-TDMA and the baseband switched SS-TDMA are compared, and it is noted that the beam-switched approach was adopted for the Intelsat VI satellite, due to a more sophisticated on-board processing technology.
