Evaluation of a 14/12 GHz 90 Mbit digital satellite link
Abstract
In 1977, the detailed design for the Anik C satellite communication system was begun with the objective to provide an increase in satellite facilities from city center to city center for both message and television services operating in the 14/12 GHz bands. The message service employs 90 Mbps digital transmission and will complement the TransCanada Telephone System (TCTS) digital terrestrial network. The considered implementation of the Anik C program represents a major step in the integration of a domestic satellite system with a terrestrial system. A field trial was undertaken to test the system prior to service and to evaluate the transmission, operation, and interactive characteristics of the digital link. A satellite link description is presented, and attention is given to the test program, its results, and sun transit measurements. The results of the field trial show that the satellite and the terrestrial systems integrate well.
