The potential role of intersatellite links in future satellite communications
Abstract
The viability and system trade-offs of laser communications for high capacity intersatellite links (ISL) in a global satellite communications network are studied. New system concepts involving ISL are developed for planning global communications satellite systems and networks by considering an integrated approach for the provision of domestic, regional, and international communication. A model is developed for ISL in the optical wavelength range for high capacity transoceanic trunking. Numerical examples are presented in order to confirm the feasibility of such a high capacity transoceanic trunk using the frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser system.
