On the moments in an inhomogeneous turbulent flow field with adverse pressure gradient
Abstract
An experimental study of various moments of zero to fourth order in a conical diffuser having a total divergence angle of 8 deg and an area ratio of 4:1 with fully developed turbulent pipe flow at entry is described. The results show that the flow field developed in the diffuser is inhomogeneous both in radial and axial directions. The distribution of the turbulent stress tensor in the diffuser is qualitatively similar, but quantitatively much in excess of those in pipe flow. The study of 3rd and 4th order turbulent moments suggests the possibility of 'extra memory effects' in the diffuser.
