Development of a thin film preparation technique for ZrO2(Y2O3) electrolytes on porous support structures
Abstract
An experimental study demonstrated that it is technologically feasible to deposit thin electrolyte layers of yttria-stabilized zirconia on porous substrates. Such structures were developed for application in high-temperature water vapor electrolysis. Thin film electrolytes were prepared by the electrochemical vapor deposition (EVD) technique. With this method, homogeneous, gas-tight layers of yttria-stabilized zirconia were prepared with a thickness of 20-50 micrometers. The thin film electrolytes show specific resistivities that are comparable to electrolyte sinters as applied in high-temperature water vapor electrolysis.
