Experimental 14/11 GHz regenerative repeater for communication satellites
Abstract
This paper describes the design and the implementation of an experimental regenerative satellite repeater in the 14/11 GHz bands for possible use in the European Communications Satellite (ECS) System. A comparison between various modulation schemes led to the selection of DPSK for the uplink and CPSK for the downlink. The system and hardware aspects leading to the final repeater design are described. Direct demodulation and modulation at the RF is considered to be superior to any IF approach. The hardware being developed comprising the receiver RF shaping filter, the differential demodulator, the baseband regenerator, and the modulator is described in detail.
