Standardization and semiconductors, a few years hence
Abstract
The topic of the suitability of VLSI standardization has been addressed. The characteristics of recent complex devices have resulted in their becoming less specialized, reversing the previous trend. Extrapolation of this trend indicates that technology is leading toward the adoption of a few General-Purpose devices which will have minor differences arising from tailoring to the situation. Guidelines are given to indicate which features should be kept or discarded in these GP devices. Current design methods are critiqued. Legal problems are addressed, which have hampered design and test activities. Discussion of standardization here is based on the principles of competition and cost effectiveness.
