Chemical, physical, and mineralogical characterization of fifteen sandstones for radionuclide sorption studies
Abstract
Samples from fifteen different sandstone formations representing a wide variation in quartz content and secondary alteration products were studied to determine their mineralogical, physical and chemical characteristics. Techniques used included X-ray diffraction, optical petrography, surface area, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and cation exchange capacity. The data obtained will be needed to determine radionuclide sorption coefficients as a function of varying mineral composition and other rock characteristics.
