Evolution in Europe of Spacelab payload data handling
Abstract
Europe's contribution to the Space Transportation System consists of the reusable Spacelab. Spacelab is a set of reconfigurable units providing for both enclosed manual experiment operations (the module) and operation of experiments in open space (pallets). Both module and pallets are reconfigurable. Missions can be flown with modules of different lengths and with different numbers of pallets. The command and data management system is considered along with the European Spacelab utilization program, aspects of data handling on the first Spacelab payload (FSLP), the lessons learned from FSLP, and data handling on the D1 mission, which is dedicated to material and life sciences. A description is presented of the processor interface adaptor.
