Sabot design optimization
Abstract
Sabot discard interactive aerodynamics for gun-launched projectiles are described using previously reported local/expansion procedures to study sabot design optimization. Design optimization is based on a figure of merit related to the pitching moment produced on the projectile, precluding the possibility of sabot impact upon projectile stabilizing fins. Design practices producing optimum configurations include initial lateral motion with small rotation, minimizing mechanical moments and facilitating fin clearance, and rapid pitch-up/deceleration minimizing interaction duration. Several point design solutions are given to identify beneficial design practices, and good agreement is found between measured wind tunnel pressure distributions and motions from actual firings of discarding sabot ammunition.
