Observations and measurements of flow in a partially-filled horizontally rotating cylinder
Abstract
Measurements of the azimuthal velocity in a partially filled horizontally rotating cylinder have been carried out in order to verify theoretical calculations for laminar flow. Results of the measurements confirm the linear inviscid theory. A discrepancy between measured and calculated retrograde rotation is attributed to conditions at the air-water interface. A map of a parameter space is presented as a preliminary guide for those using fluid-filled rotors.
