Reliability optimization of a surveillance radar
Abstract
The PAVE FAWS phase-array search/track radar for submarine launched ballistic missile target detection and characterization supplies the USAF SPACETRACK with satellite detection, tracking, and identification. The USAF proposal specifies MTBF of 100 hr and an operational availability of 0.98 which can be accomplished by a system architecture which optimizes reliability, availability, and easy maintenance. The architecture is designed for hardware redundancy, fault tolerance in antenna electronics allowing degradation within the specification, high reliability screened and qualified parts, and automated diagnostics.
