Upgrading a production machine tool for precision machining
Abstract
Precision machining technology is applied to an existing machine tool. A two axis, T-base lathe was retrofitted with air-bearing slides and spindle, laser interferometer feedback, electric drives, a vibration isolation base, and a computer numerical control system. The resulting contouring capability for a spherical part improved from 4 micron to 1.27 micron while the surface finish capability improved from approximately 0.23 microns to 0.1 microns peak to valley.
