An experimental investigation of rise times of very weak shock waves
Abstract
The technique of using exploding wires to generate N waves is developed and described. The discrepancy between the shock rise times predicted by the weak shock theory and the 100 to 1000 times greater rise times measured for sonic booms is investigated. Consideration is given to N waves generated by sparks in the UTIAS Traveling Wave Sonic Boom Simulator, and from supersonic aircraft. The experimental equipment is described.
