Field distribution in the focal region of deployable umbrella reflectors
Abstract
Results are presented on the field distribution in the focal region of a deployable umbrella parabolic reflector. It is shown that, with normal incidence of the plane wave on the reflector, the point of maximum concentration of focused energy is displaced from the geometrical focus towards the reflector, a distance that is significantly greater than the distance determined by Ingerson and Wong (1972). Field redistribution towards the edges of the focal region occurs, which indicates that feeds with a point phase center are inefficient in umbrella reflector antennas. Double wavelength-variation has no effect on the position of the focal point.
