Optical phase conjugation of picosecond pulses in four-wave mixing in lithium niobate
Abstract
Observation of the optical phase conjugation of picosecond pulses at the second harmonic from a YAG:Nd laser in a four-wave interaction in a lithium niobate crystal is reported, and a method for using optical phase conjugation to study the dynamics of fast processes is proposed. The arrangement of the experiment is described, and the efficiency of the optical phase conjugation is estimated to be about 0.5 percent. It is found that essentially complete cancellation of the wavefront distortions can be achieved for a steady-state phase inhomogeneity inserted into the object beam. Optical phase conjugation can also be exploited to detect rapid changes accompanied by a phase inhomogeneity.
