The helium-rich star W66 in NGC 6530
Abstract
Spectra were taken on two nights with the CTIO 4m Echelle Spectrograph of the reportedly helium rich star Walker 66 in the young cluster NGC 6530. Comparison of spectral line equivalent widths with published helium rich models yields N(He) equals 0.58 on one night and 0.18 on the other, typical of a helium rich star. The cluster diagram indicates an age for the cluster of less than one-million years, which puts a limit on the time scale for the development of the helium rich phenomenon. A strong feature in the spectra at 4725 A remains to be identified.
