The origin and structure of the fields of the upper main sequence magnetic stars
Abstract
After a brief survey of the observational evidence dealing with the upper main sequence magnetic stars, an account is given of current theoretical problems. Particular attention is given to the rival fossil and dynamo theories for the origin of the field. Evolutionary effects are also discussed. The theoretical problems include the origin of the field, the mode of operation of the dynamo, the structure of the internal field, the stability of the predicted field structures, and the reason why only a minority of upper main sequence stars are magnetic. It is thought that theoretical work will benefit from the advances that have been made in obtaining homogeneous sets of observational data.
