Trends in image display systems
Abstract
The historical background, present capabilities and future character of image displays are discussed, with stress on interactive processing of complex image algorithms. Among the system organizations surveyed are microprocessor, bus, parallel, and feedback loop architectures. The future impact of devolopments in refresh memory/display formats, graphics and data merging, spatial processing, data input/output and man-machine interface are then assessed. It is concluded that a strong trend away from both spatial and temporal discrete operations is already discernible, with the emergence of smooth functions that can be controlled without temporal hysteresis, and that the trend is not linked to significant cost increases.
