Spectrophotometric exploration of the star alpha Col.
Abstract
A spectrophotometric study of the B8Ve star Alpha Col (HD 37795), which has recently been found to exhibit H beta and H gamma emission indicative of a gas envelope, is presented. Spectrograms were obtained for the period December 18 to December 29, 1973 at a dispersion of 12 A/mm in the range 3200-5000 A by the 1.5 m telescope at the ESO. Magnitudes, equivalent widths and residual intensities are shown for the H beta, H gamma and H delta emissions, the Balmer absorption lines, and the 2 3P-n 3D, 2 3P-n 3S and 2 1P-n 1D series of He I, and used to derive values for the numbers of H and He atoms in the various quantum states. A ratio of the logs of the numbers of hydrogen to helium atoms of 1.37 is found, and the presence of changes in the profiles of the H beta and H gamma lines is noted.
