Hubble ratio and solar motion from 300 spirals having distances derived from H I line widths
Abstract
Solutions are presented for the motion of the sun, with respect to an all-sky sample of 300 spiral galaxies having precise distance moduli derived from improved versions of the Tully-Fisher relation. The solutions show that: (1) in the distance interval 2-29 Mpc, the solar motion relative to the frame of reference defined by galaxies is 306 plus or minus 40 km/sec toward the galactic coordinates 117 deg plus or minus 12 deg, plus 30 plus or minus 7 deg; (2) after correction for local motion in the Local Group, the peculiar motion of the Group is 254 km/sec toward 96 deg, minus 10 deg, which is in agreement with the previously reported solutions for 200 spiral galaxies having distances 2-32 Mpc from optical tertiary indicators; and (3) after correction for the mean solar motion relative to the nearby galaxies, the apparent peculiar motion of the comoving nearby region with respect to the frame of reference defined by the 3 K background radiation is 488 km/sec toward 155 deg, minus 25 deg.
