Angular momentum orientation of spiral galaxies.
Abstract
The distribution of spin-angular momentum orientation of 1650 spiral galaxies is studied through their spiral winding direction. No significant anisotropy of distribution is detected for physical clusterings on various scales. This is consistent with the random and perpendicularity models, which were examined for the spatial orientations of the planes of galaxies with respect to the plane of the distribution of the galaxies in the physical clustering of the system. Results of the number ratio of S galaxies to Z galaxies by morphological type suggest a significant predominance of S galaxies, which confirms findings of Borchkhadze and Kogoshivili (1976) for 256 Sbc-Sc spirals.
