The Algol-Type Systems
Abstract
The development of the current understanding of Algol-type systems is examined with particular reference to the hypothesis of mass transfer between the components and to the role of circumstellar matter in the evolution of these systems. Consideration is given to Kopal's (1980) interpretation of the distortion of the velocity curves of Algol-type systems, and to Kopal's critique of mass transfer, which is based on the assertion that gravity is not the dominant force acting on the stream, even after it has left the mass-losing star.
