The scattering of Lyman-alpha radiation in comet atmospheres
Abstract
A theoretical study of the scattering of solar Lyman-alpha radiation in a cometary hydrogen atmosphere is presented. Formulas are obtained which can be used to determine the profile of the cometary Lyman-alpha line and to obtain isophotes for cometary Lyman-alpha radiation. These formulas are independent of the comet-atmosphere model and can be used for both exospheric and dynamic models.
