Solar oscillations and limb darkening fluctuations
Abstract
Attention is given to the controversy now surrounding observational results concerning solar pulsations. It is pointed out that brightness, diameter and velocity measurements can be spoiled by atmospheric effects. Measurements of the apparent limb darkening profile, with various image quality conditions, obtained by means of high-speed scanning (approximately 3000 arcsec/sec) are presented. The measurements show fluctuations of the maximum brightness gradient with frequencies found by other investigators. It is noted that the results cannot be interpreted as terrestrial atmospheric transparency but rather as a brightness redistribution of the apparent limb darkening.
