High-velocity gas toward the Galactic Center.
Abstract
The rapid motion of the gas within several pc of the galactic nucleus has been known since 1974. The considered investigation was conducted to obtain more information about the high-velocity gas. In 1979 and 1980, new, more sensitive H2CO and H I observations were made toward Sgr A with a 100-m telescope. Measurements show that the high-velocity gas near -190 km/s really exists along the line of sight to Sgr A. Two possible interpretations of the available information are considered. According to the 'field' model, the cloud is part of a large-scale equilibrium structure, such as the inclined disk or bar proposed by Liszt and Burton (1980). The second interpretation, which is currently preferred, involves an 'ejection' model with a cloud location near the galactic center.
