How far does M101 extend
Abstract
It is noted that the image of M101 shows weak, arm-like extended outer structures which are not seen on deep plates obtained with ground-based telescopes. These features are best explained by clusters of young stars with an enhanced proportion of massive stars. It is pointed out, however, that an explanation of these features by dust, associated with the extended clouds of neutral hydrogen and illuminated by the light from the galaxy, cannot be excluded. A definitive assessment of this observation is thought to require further deep UV and visible imagery.
