C II two-electron transitions
Abstract
Transition probabilities for C II from terms up to 2s2 4f 2F0 are calculated. Allowed electric dipole and intercombination transitions and the forbidden transitions among the 2s2 2p 2P0 and 2s 2p2 4P levels are treated. Attention is drawn to the possibility of determining interstellar extinction with the lines at 1761 A, 2838 A, and 6582 A corresponding to the strongest transitions from 2s2 3p 2P0. We have also obtained a reliable oscillator strength for the 2s2 3d 2D - 2s2 4f 2F0 transition at 4268 A which has been employed to derive carbon abundances in planetary nebulae and early type stars.
