Turbulent confined vortex flow
Abstract
The swirling flow of turbulent incompressible fluids in a confined vortex chamber of large aspect ratio is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A simple experimental scheme is built where careful measurements of both flow rates and swirl are made. In addition, visualization of the vortex flow study indicates that the vortex flow inside the chamber may be divided into three distinct regions. A one-dimensional and a boundary layer type of analysis are then utilized to obtain flow parameters. Mass flow rates predicted by both models have been found to compare favorably with the measured values especially for medium and high swirl. The effect of exit flow configuration (orifices) on the flow rate seems to be negligible for high values of swirl, but has a pronounced effect for low swirl flow. Conditions for air core formation at the center of the chamber are also investigated.
