Concepts for satellite-aided maritime distress call systems
Abstract
Various emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) systems that have been proposed by various countries are discussed, with comparisons made in order to determine the optimal design. In discussing operational requirements, it is noted that future EPIRB systems should be part of a global maritime distress and safety system and should ideally be configured so as to promote safety of life at sea in all navigable waters, including those beyond 70 deg N or S latitude. Requirements of the Aeronautical Mobile Services are to be taken into consideration since a shared system might yield benefits to both services.
