Oscillator evaluation techniques. B - Pulsed oscillators
Abstract
A description is presented of techniques used in the measurement of the frequencies of pulsed microwave oscillators, taking into account pulsed frequency counters, frequency down conversion, the absorption wavemeter, filter frequency discriminators, delay line frequency discriminators, and the RF spectra of outputs from pulsed oscillators. It is pointed out that frequency measurement techniques using frequency down conversion, filter frequency discriminators and delay line frequency discriminators are capable of measuring X-band frequencies during pulses of up to 10 microseconds duration to within an accuracy of typically 0.5 MHz. However, the employment of these methods is difficult and time consuming. The measurement of frequencies using a pulsed frequency counter is reasonably accurate, but the instrument is very expensive. The simplest methods of frequency measurement involve the use of a wavemeter or spectrum analyzer.
