Petrography of rocks and characteristics of the chemical composition of minerals from Mare Crisium regolith
Abstract
A preliminary petrographic and mineralogical study of Luna-24 soil samples from Mare Crisium is presented. Two main rock types were identified from mineral and chemical compositions: crystobalite gabbro and olivine gabbro. Dolerites and rocks of similar composition can be considered to be intermediate rocks. As a whole, the Luna-24 rocks can be characterized as Al2O3-rich low-titanium basalts with low alkali-metal content. The low-titanium basalts from the Luna-16 and Luna-20 samples are analogous to the Luna-24 rocks.
