Experiments in satellite communications with small earth terminals
Abstract
The paper describes COMSAT experiments in satellite communications with small earth terminals. The Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) was launched into a geostationary orbit with two transponders which made it the most powerful communications satellite in orbit; the COMSAT experiments focused on very small and highly transportable earth terminals that could be used for emergency communications during natural disasters. Disaster communications exercises and two real disaster situations were conducted jointly with the American Red Cross; other experiments included applications of business communications with satellite earth terminals located at the customers' premises and the use of the wide bandwidth and high e.i.r.p. of the CTS for experiments in digital television and data transmissions.
