HYFIRE: A Tokamak, high-temperature eletrolysis system
Abstract
The conceptual design of a commercial nuclear power system which uses high temperature electrolysis to produce synthetic fuels is described. The HYFIRE system includes a Tokamak fusion power reactor suppling electrical and thermal energy to an array of electrolytes. The electrolytes produce hydrogen which can be used either directly as a fuel or in the production of hydrocarbons. The HYFIRE design is based on STARFIRE which uses the deuterium tritium lithium fuel cycle. The STARFIRE plasma shape and characteristics are assumed, but a different blanket design is envisioned.
