Colour photography in astronomy
Abstract
The history of color photography in astronomy is reviewed. Attention is given to the origins of color photography, the direct use of color films in astrophotography, cooled cameras for astrophotography, indirect color photography, and color balance. Examples of astronomical color pictures made with the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian and 1.2-m UK Schmidt telescopes are provided. The techniques employed to prepare the illustrations are described in detail.
