Alternatives for the development of future television systems
Abstract
The results of Japanese investigations into subjective perception picture quality are used as the starting point for developing a high definition television system. Parameters for such a system include high detail definition, line free picture representation, convenient picture ratio (5:3); no cross color interference, and no cross luminance interference. The Japanese concept to correct current deficiencies involves increased number of lines, increased bandwidth and increased capacity requirement with all the associated consequences and no apparent compatibility with existing systems. The possibility of achieving an improvement in picture quality essentially compatible with present TV system, but using new techniques is considered, as well as the restrictions and limitations. Such approaches discussed include the use of digital signal processing techniques, and highly complex systems, including receivers, using the VLSI technique.
