Use of measurements of atmospheric thermal radiation to determine the refraction of radiowaves
Abstract
A method for determining refraction angles at low elevation angles is presented which is based on regression relations between radio wave refraction and brightness temperatures of the thermal emission of the atmosphere at various combinations of frequencies and measurement angles. Attention is given to the choice of optimal frequencies and angles for the measurement of radio emission, and to the effects of measurement errors on the accuracy of refraction predictions.
