The superheterodyne amplification of electromagnetic waves in a beam-plasma system
Abstract
A superheterodyne amplification method is developed for use in beam-plasma systems which makes it possible to reduce the pumping-wave intensity by several orders of magnitude. The method is based on amplification of the longitudinal space charge wave of the electron beam, with associated parametric coupling between waves. For values of gamma much greater than alpha (where gamma is the amplification coefficient of the space charge wave and alpha is the pumping-wave intensity) the pumping-wave intensity can be significantly reduced.
