The Spectrum and Term Analysis of Neutral Phosphorus, P I
Abstract
The spectrum of neutral phosphorus has been studied photographically at Lund with a pulsed high-frequency electrodeless-discharge in the regions 1100-2700 Å and 4000-11 500 Å. The Fourier transform spectrograph at Laboratoire Aimé Cotton, Orsay, has been used for recording the region 10 000-40 000 Å with a microwave tube as a light-source. In all, 1800 P I transitions have been measured and classified.
A total of 282 levels, about 180 of which are new, have been established. The levels belong to the configurations 4s-9s, 3p-6p, 3d-9d, 4f-9f, and 6g in the 3s23p2(3P)nl system, 4s, 5s, 4p, 3d of the (1D)nl system and to (1S)4s. Of the configuration 3s3p4 the terms 4P and 2D are known while 2P and 2S, predicted to fall above the first ionization limit, are still missing. The effects of the perturbations between (3P)nd, sp4 and (1D)3d have been studied by parametric calculations of the composite configuration sp4 + 3d + 4d + 5d.- Publication:
