Laminar natural convection in rectangular enclosures
Abstract
A computer code (FIRE) capable of numerically simulating steady laminar flow due to buoyancy effects within rectangular enclosures is developed. This code combines the unconditional stability of the exponential differencing scheme (EDS) with the economy of a variable grid formulation, and also the false transient method with the alternating direction implicit (ADI) procedure, so as to obtain accurate solutions at reasonable cost. FIRE is used to investigate two different problems. The first is a numerical investigation of free convective flow in shallow enclosures, for the case of moderate as well as low Prandtl numbers. The second problem is a numerical investigation of buoyant flow within a square enclosure subjected to both horizontal and vertical temperature differentials. The third problem is an analytical study of the high Rayleigh number regime in shallow enclosures, characterized by laminar boundary layers lining all four walls.
