Some novel techniques for digital and sampled analog signal processing
Abstract
A lowpass filter structure that uses only the coefficients 0, +1, and -1 is proposed. The scheme employs a delta modulation like encoding of the impulse response and uses interpolation to increase the accuracy of the encoding. It is shown that with sufficiently long filters it is possible to approximate a lowpass response as closely as desired. Methods for the design of these filters are presented and examples are given. Techniques for improving the quality of these filters are discussed. A structure for highpass filters is presented. A technique is presented for improving the quality of the approximation by expanding the set of allowable coefficients. Alternate methods of interpolation are considered and simple symmetric sharpening of these filters is studied. A structure that employs a double delta modulation encoding of the impulse response is also proposed.
