Experimental and theoretical investigations on the influence of shear in double diffusive convection
Abstract
The influence of shear in double diffusive convective systems were investigated with heat and salt as diffusing components. The surface discharge of heated saline jets into ambient with stable, constant, salt gradient was examined. Both three dimensional and two dimensional cases were covered. Salt finger convection in steady shear flow also studied. Both the cases of constant and variable shear were addressed. The results based on a linear stability analysis showed that up to Reynolds number of 10 to the 5th power, the presence of a steady shear stabilizes all perturbations except that with infinite wavelengths in the direction of the shear.
