A Search for Carbon and M-Type Stars in Eight Globular Clusters.
Abstract
A method described for identifying cool stars of type M and C by means of direct photography through narrow-band interference filters. The relative magnitudes in filters centered at 7780 and 8120 A reveal the presence of absorption by TiO or CN, respectively, while a third filter at 10400 A allows the definition of a color index. Photographs of eight globular cluster were taken through the two inch diameter filters with an S-1 imagetube. The reduction of the photographic plates to obtain TiO anc CN indices is presented and several M-type and strong CN stars are identified from the photographic photometry.
