Efficient second- and third-harmonic generation in hyper-Gaussian laser beams
Abstract
Harmonic generation has been investigated in laser beams with hyper-Gaussian intensity profiles in potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals. Energy efficiencies of 80 and 50% have been achieved in the conversion of laser radiation to the second and third harmonic, respectively. The efficiencies obtained indicate the practicality of utilizing the harmonics of a Nd:glass laser for plasma heating in controlled thermonuclear fusion applications.
