On the composition of HII regions in southern galaxies. II. NGC 6822 and 1313.
Abstract
AAT/IPCS spectra have been obtained from seven outlying H II regions in the Local Group Im galaxy NGC 6822 and from the nucleus and six H II regions at various radial distances in the isolated SBd galaxy NGC 1313. Abundances are deduced from emission-line intensities by a combination of direct electron-temperature determinations and estimates based on the excitation class inferred from log (O II + O III)/H-beta. Both galaxies have quite uniform abundances all over, in agreement with previous findings for the arm regions of a barred spiral and for Magellanic Irregulars. The abundance ratio N/O in NGC 6822 is exceptionally low, extending a result previously found by Lequeux et al.
