Investigation of lasers with coupled ring resonators
Abstract
The spectral and lasing characteristics of a laser based on a coupled ring resonator in a figure eight configuration are examined. Expressions for the amplitude of the electromagnetic field and the spectral periodicity of the resonator are obtained in an electrodynamic approach, and the spectral characteristics are illustrated for the limiting case of strong and weak coupling between the resonators, and equal resonator perimeters. Secular equations describing the amplitude and frequency of stimulated emission modes in the coupled ring resonator are derived and solved numerically, and the effects of mode extinction are considered. Possible applications of coupled ring resonator lasers are indicated.
