Thermodynamic study of the molecules BiLi and PbLi by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry
Abstract
The composition of the gas phase over lithium alloys with bismuth and lead, respectively, has been investigated. Equilibria involving the molecules BiLi (g) and PbLi (g) have been studied using Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. From the measured data and from auxiliary data from the literature the following dissociation energies, D00; and standard heats of formation, ΔHf,0, were obtained: D00(BiLi)=(135.7±6) kJ mol-1=(32.4±1.4) kcal mol-1, D00(PbLi)=(74.9±8 kJ mol-1=(17.9±1.9) kcal mol-1, ΔHf,00(BiLi (g))=(231.9±7) kJ mol-1=(55.4±1.7) kcal mol-1, and ΔHf,00(PbLi (g))=(278.6±9) kJ mol-1 =(66.6±2.2) kcal mol-1.
