Polarimetry of T Tau and RY Tau
Abstract
Results of five-color observations of the optical linear polarization of RY Tau and T Tau are presented. The observations were carried out at the Crimean astrophysical observatory in 1976-1978. The light variations in V and variations of percentage of polarization for RY Tau have opposite sense and a maximum range of variation in the ultraviolet region. RY Tau seems to have a flat, disklike gaseous-dust envelope. As it follows from variations of the wavelength dependence of polarization, two scattering mechanisms operate in the envelope: Thomson scattering dominates at the high level of the star brightness and scattering by the dust grains at lower stellar brightness. It is assumed that the fading of the star light, which is not accompanied by color change is due to the screening of the star by the dusty envelope. The dust in the envelope of T Tau consists of larger particles than that of the RY Tau.
